According to the EPA, indoor air quality can be five times more polluted than outdoor air. Add some messy surroundings and sticky countertops, and you’ll want to avoid your house as much as possible.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can try in order to improve the air quality in your home. We’ve taken a look at our Deep Cleaning Services Playbook, and come up with 4 simple cleaning ideas that should do the trick. With a little bit of planning, you can keep your home free of dust and bacteria that cause allergies.

Here are 4 simple cleaning tips to help you maintain a clean home all year long:

1. Remove dust from hard to reach places.

Ceiling fans, tops of doors, artwork, top of furniture, books, light fixtures, etc. – dust settles on all these places. Horizontal surfaces are not the only ones that need a good dusting. If you look up or down, you’re going to find many places where dust gathers because it’s usually overlooked during regular cleaning sessions. Vacuum under the furniture or behind the fridge too. Less dust, less allergies.

2. Window cleaning.

Many of our customers request window cleaning once or twice a year, but we think people are underestimating the importance of clean windows. A clean window lets more light shine through which, in turn, creates a more pleasant atmosphere in the house. But if that’s not enough, think of all the dust and cobwebs that have accumulated on your windowsills and panes over months of neglect. Every time you open the window those particles invade your home.

3. Wash and disinfect garbage cans and toilet brush holders.

Bacteria is to blame for a lot of the bad smells that fill your kitchen and bathroom. It’s also to blame for some allergies and diseases. That’s why garbage cans, wastebaskets, laundry baskets and toilet brush holders need a deep cleaning once in a while. They may not always smell bad, but that doesn’t mean they’re not breeding grounds for all sorts of microorganisms. It’s better to keep everything fresh and clean.

4. Control what enters your house.

Preventing dirt from entering your home is as important as cleaning it if it does. We suggest getting an outdoor doormat for cleaning footwear, and maybe even invest in a boot rack for wet shoes. A boot scraper is also quite useful, depending on where you live. By having a place to leave your wet or dirty shoes at the door, you will avoid putting dirt stains on your carpet and floors.

While it’s true that modern chemistry has created some very effective cleaning products, not all of them are completely safe. Actually, some can be quite dangerous for your health and home. That is why we encourage you to read the ingredient labels on every product you purchase. It’s the first and most important step in choosing the right cleaning products for your home.

First, stay away from products that don’t have an ingredient label.

Contact the company and demand that they make the ingredient list available. Our advice is to not purchase such products because lack of transparency raises big red flags.

Second, know what to watch out for.

Keeping an eye out for the most common toxins is a good place to start:

  1. Ammonia: toxic when inhaled, swallowed or touched.
  2. Antibacterial products and various disinfectants: unless your house doubles as a hospital, you don’t need them. According to medical data, the overuse of disinfectants may be to blame for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. So, replace these with water and soap, or a few other natural alternatives (like vinegar), and you’ll be fine.
  3. Butyl Glycol, Ethylene Glycol: dangerous to the nervous system, liver & kidneys, but very common substances in popular cleaning products.
  4. Bleach: corrosive and irritating to eyes and lungs. It can also stain textiles and other surfaces if not used correctly.
  5. Phosphates: very often found in detergents (laundry and dish), but very harmful to aquatic life.
  6. Phthalates: hormone-disruptors, found frequently in the fragrance ingredients section of many products, not just industrial cleaners. They may cause allergic reactions and irritation, so you should avoid them as much as possible. Choose natural-oil scented products instead.

Third, replace chemicals with natural alternatives.

Many synthetic cleaning products can be successfully replaced with natural options, such as baking soda, citrus or vinegar. Knowing and using these alternatives will keep your home free from dangerous chemicals. It will also save you some money, as these alternatives are usually cheaper than common cleaning products.

Here are a few options:

  1. Baking soda: can be used to clean many things. Add a little water, and you can scrub any difficult stains to a nice shine. In combination with vinegar or dish soap (for super strength) you can use it to clean kitchen and bathroom tile, carpets, showers and tubs, toilets and even stained clothes.
  2. Marseille soap: a gentle olive-oil soap, great for general cleaning and laundry.
  3. Lemon juice: the “acid” ingredient in many natural cleaning products. It dissolves grease with ease and leaves a nice fresh, natural smell.
  4. Vinegar: a “power-cleaner” good for just about anything. Any type of vinegar works well. It’s great for cleaning tough water and mildew spots. It’s also useful for window cleaning, makes glass shine and dishes gleam (if you add it to your dishwasher’s rinse compartment). Plus, so much more.

We encourage you to contact us if you have special requirements regarding the type of cleaning products that you’d like us to bring and work with in your home. So, no matter if you need a housekeeper for your regular cleaning every week, or you need a deep cleaning once or twice a year, we have your back. When you book online or by phone, a maid will visit your property, and make sure everything is impeccable.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a freshly cleaned home, is there? Knowing that every surface has been wiped, every pillow fluffed and every object dusted. It’s a very comforting feeling that doesn’t last long, unfortunately. The moment your kids come back from playing outside, or your dog tracks in mud from the garden, or you drop popcorn on your couch while enjoying a quiet evening in front of the TV, the feeling fades. And it’s normal.

The way to keep the feeling alive is not to stop enjoying life, but to set aside a couple of minutes every day to tidy up. No more than 10 minutes. Here’s what we mean by tidying up:

1. Pick up your things.

Putting things back in their place after you use them is probably the simplest way you can keep your house clean outside your regular cleaning schedule. It’s fast and easy to do, and it gives you a sense of accomplishment. In addition, fewer things lying around means less allergens, more space, and less time spent finding lost items. It’s also easier and faster for your cleaner to do their job if they don’t have to pick up piles of clothes, shoes, toys, etc. before they start vacuuming and dusting.

2. Pile your laundry.

If you keep your dirty laundry lying around, think how much time you or your housekeeper spends tracking down every item that needs to be washed. The solution: create a laundry corner or invest in a laundry basket where you deposit dirty clothing and other textiles until it’s time to wash them. By tidying up this way, you isolate bad smells and bacteria from the rest of your home.

3. Wipe spills.

You can live with a water spill on your floor (it dries right up, and no harm done), but juice, coffee or other liquids need to be wiped off fast. These liquids may be hard to clean once they dry out, and may damage the floor (or any other surface they spill on). They can also attract bacteria and insects (ants love sugar). The best way to keep your house clean longer is to wipe these spills quickly.

4. Clean out bad food.

In addition to producing bad odors, old food and drinks are breeding grounds for bacteria that can take over your fridge and your entire kitchen if you let it. Our advice: throw out expired food every week, to keep it from contaminating your kitchen. For a fresher-smelling fridge, you can put a dish with baking soda in your refrigerator, to “collect” powerful smells.

5. Throw out the trash.

The longer you keep the trash in your house, the worse it will smell, especially if you’ve thrown out food, or other organic matter. A way to keep your house clean is to take the garbage out frequently. Don’t rely only on your cleaner to do it. Once a week is not enough. Not if you want to maintain that freshly cleaned home feeling.

In conclusion, you don’t need to polish countertops and vacuum or mop the floors every day in order to keep your house clean between regular cleaning or deep cleaning sessions. You need to pick up your things on a daily basis, and deal with spillage and bad odors fast. These simple activities will help your housekeeper do their weekly job more efficiently, and will also help you enjoy a clean home longer.
